What’s a “Red Leg”?

“Red Leg” is a term used within the U.S. Army when referring to a soldier serving within the artillery. Red is the traditional color of the artillery branch. Its history began with red trousers that artillerymen wore during the Civil War. The bright and distinct uniform variations of individual State militias worn at the start of the war coalesced into a standard all blue battle uniform with colored stripes running down the sides of pant legs to indicate fighting function specialty.

Though the red striped legs of artillerymen and women is no longer a part of today’s Army dress uniform, it’s common to find enthusiasts wearing red socks instead of the required black socks at formal events in order to show pride and embrace the tradition created by artillerymen past.
